WINONA, Minn. — With back-to-back meets and the MIAC Championships looming right around the corner, Saint Mary's University swimming and diving coach
Eric Lindquist decided to give his swimmers Friday night off.
Not off, as in they didn't have to compete, rather, off as in having his swimmers compete in "off events," events they wouldn't normally swim.
Thus, Friday's 128-85 men's loss to Luther, and the women's 181.5-43.5 setback to the Norse can be a bit deceiving.
"It was an interesting meet," admitted Lindquist. "We swam most of our people in off events — giving everyone a chance to swim in some events they wouldn't normally swim. With back-to-back meets (Friday vs. Luther and Saturday at UW-River Falls), and then the conference championships, it's important to keep things fresh."
The Cardinals did pick up three first-place finishes, as
Logan Twedt (Hastings, Minn.) won the 1,000 freestyle (11:11.29),
Sean Gibson (Chicago, Ill.) took the 200 freestyle (1:54.58) and
Scott Schultz (Cary, Ill.) touched the wall first in the 100 backstroke (56.95). Gibson also chipped in a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle (51.95), while Tony Gruenke (Sheboygan, Wis. / 50 freestyle, 24.00; 100 butterfly, 1:01.05) and
Brian Travers (Chicago, Ill. / 500 freestyle, 5:28.04) also recorded second-place showings.
On the women's side, Lindsey Salsibury (Waukesha, Wis.) posted a pair of second-place finishes in the 100 back stroke (1:08.63) and the 50 freestyle (26.71), while Heidi Andre (Fairbanks, Alaska) placed second in the 100 freestyle (1:01.79) and Abby Huot (Lake Elmo, Minn.) was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.38).
"I like what I'm seeing out of our swimmers," Lindquist said. "We are continuing to improve and work hard, which in encouraging heading into the conference meet."
