Game Summary
MOORHEAD, Minn. — When the Saint Mary's University women's hockey had its season-high five-game winning streak snapped by UW-Stevens Point last Saturday, SMU coach Duncan Ryhorchuk barely batted an eye.
His Cardinals had bigger frish to fry than the nonconference Pointers.
Like Concordia.
And fry they did Friday evening, as SMU rebounded from that 3-0 loss in convincing fashion, getting third-period powerplay goals from Jaimie Mussehl (South St. Paul, Minn.) and Christy Hicks (Bloomington, Minn.) to rally the Cardinals to a 4-3 MIAC victory over the Cobbers.
With the victory, the Cardinals (10-2-1 MIAC, 12-5-1 overall) moved to within two points of the Cobbers (11-3-1 MIAC, 12-3-1 overall) in the race for the No. 2 spot in the MIAC standings.
The Cardinals got on the board first, as Aja Walters (Fairmont, Minn.) scored her second goal of the season midway through the first period.
The second period, however, belonged to Concordia — no, make that, all Concordia's Annie Knierim. Knierim scored a pair of goals before the second period was two minutes old, then completed the hat trick with her 15th of the season at the 5:52 mark to give the Cobbers what appeared to be a commanding 3-1 advnantage.
Emily Kearns (Hopkins, Minn.) pulled the Cardinals within one, 3-2, heading into the third period, where Mussehl and Hicks netted their powerplay goals to give SMU the come-from-behind victory.
Missie Meemken (St. Cloud, Minn.) picked up the win in goal for SMU, stopping 24 of the 27 shots she faced, while Concordia goalie Syla Wilson stopped 24 of 28 shots.
