ST. PAUL, Minn. — When the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team scored Satuday night against St. Catherine, the goals came in bunches.
Jaimie Mussehl (South St. Paul, Minn.) and Mindy Westergren (Lonsdale, Minn.) scored one minute apart in the second period and Emily Kearns (Hopkins, Minn.) scored twice in the span of nine seconds late in the third period as the Cardinals beat St. Catherine 5-1 to complete their MIAC sweep of the Wildcats.
The Cardinals, who maintained their strangle-hold on the No. 2 spot in the MIAC standings with two conference games remaining, got on the board first at the 16:38 mark of the first period as Mindy Westergren (Lonsdale, Minn.) beat St. Catherine goalie Kendra Maxson.
Mussehl pushed the Cardinal lead to 2-0 12 minutes into the second period, but St. Catherine cut the gap to 2-1 as Jen Rogers beat SMU goalie Missie Meemken (St. Cloud, Minn.) at the 13:07 mark. Ten seconds later, the Cardinals' lead was back to two as Westergren took a feed from sister Missy and beat Maxson to give SMU a 3-1 lead. heading into the final period.
Still clinging to the two-goal lead late in the third period, Kearns put the game out of reach, scoring on a feed from Monica Deringer (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) at the 18:18 mark, then got a pass from Mussehl and beat Maxson nine seconds later.
Meemken picked up the win in goal for SMU, stopping 37 of the Wildcats 38 shots — including 17 of 18 in the second period.
