Cardinals come up empty against Gusties

Donny Nadeau, SMU Sports Information Office

WINONA, Minn. — It was a good news, bad news kind of day for the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team Wednesday.

The good news: SMU notched its fourth win of the season, steamrolling past UW-Stout 7-2 in a nonconference match at the St. T's Tennis & Sports courts.

The bad news: While one half of the Cardinal squad was doing the steamrolling against UW-Stout, the other half was getting steamrolled, as Gustavus cruised to a 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win in St. Peter, Minn.

The Cardinals dominated the Blue Devils in improving their overall record to 4-8, winning five of the six singles matches — including four in straight sets. SMU also posted wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.

As dominating as SMU was against UW-Stout, however, wasn't nearly as dominating as the Gusties were, as Gustavus lost just eight games in winning all six singles and three doubles matches in straight sets.
