WINONA, Minn. — When the Saint Mary's University men's tennis team decides it's time to break out of a losing streak, they don't mess around.
The Cardinals, mired in a three-match slump that started with back-to-back losses by 5-4 decisions, and culminated with a 6-3 setback to Macalester on Friday, took out their frustrations on UM-Morris Saturday, routing the Cougars 8-1 in a nonconference match at the St. T's Tennis & Sports courts.
"It was a solid match all the way up and down the lineup," said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. "We've been coming out on the short end of some really close matches lately, and it was nice to see everyone put it all together and come up with a win like this."
The Cardinals, who improved to 5-10 overall, swept the six singles matches, getting straight-set wins from Geoff Granseth (Winona, Minn.), Mark Leeder (Milwaukee, Wis.), Brad Reichuber (Mahtomedi, Minn.), Bryan Haville (Onalaska, Wis.) and Jeff Dobbs (Pipestone, Minn.), and a three-setter from Ian Garvey (St. Paul, Minn.) at No. 6.
Dobbs teamed with Chad Boyer (Albert Lea, Minn.) to post a 9-7 win at No. 2 doubles, while Chad Brusky (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and Matt Hoehn (Onalaska, Wis.) completed the rout with a 9-7 win at No. 3 doubles.
The women's team wasn't quite as fortunate as the men, as St. Olaf handed the Cardinals their third straight conference loss, 6-3.
"We're playing pretty well right now, we just can't seem to get over the hump when it comes to winning tiebreakers," admitted Halberg, whose team dropped both of its tiebreakers against the Oles, which, had they won both, would have turned the loss into a 5-4 win. "The efforts there, we just haven't been able to catch any breaks along the way."
Beth Carroll (Chicago, Ill.) and
Dena Bing (Cannon Falls, Minn.) picked up SMU's singles wins at No. 5 and No. 6, while Carroll and
Allison Ast (Conway Springs, Kan.) — victim of a 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 loss at No. 3 singles — accounted for the Cardinals' other win with an 8-6 triumph at No. 3 doubles.
"Both teams had good day," said Halberg. "The way we are playing right now, there is a fine line between winning and losing. We need to find a way to get a couple of breaks so we can cross that line."
