ST. PETER, Minn. — The way the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season has been going of late, Saint Mary's University baseball coach Nick Whaley could have probably predicted his team's outcome Wednesday afternoon against Gustavus and save his team the 2 1/ 2-hour bus ride.

After all, in their last three MIAC doubleheaders, the Cardinals have come away with splits.

Make that, their last four MIAC doubleheaders.

Gustavus banged out 12 hits, including three from Brandon Burmeister, in beating the Cardinals 8-3 in the opener, while SMU bounced back, hammering five Gustavus pitchers for 18 hits en route to a 13-7 win and the split.

SMU managed just four hits off Gustavus pitchers John Schaffler and Adam Roberts, while SMU's Cory Kanz (Oronoco, Minn.) surrendered 12 in taking the loss.

Gustavus tagged Kanz for three runs in the second inning, one more in the third, then added back-to-back two-run innings in the fifth and sixth to seal the win. Tony Cicalello (St. Paul, Minn.) drove in all three of SMU's runs.

In the nightcap, Cicalello was a perfect 3-for-3, while David McMahon (Coon Rapids, Minn.) was 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored. Six different SMU players had at least two hits, including Cicalello, McMahon, Aaron Smolinski (White Bear Lake, Minn.), Dusty Wilhelmy (Mendota Heights, Minn.), Matt Rink (Winona, Minn.) and Ryan Majerus (St. Paul, Minn.).
