RIVER FALLS, Wis. — This time, the breaks went the Cardinals way.
The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team picked up key, three-set wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles en route to a 6-3 nonconference win over UW-River Falls Wednesday afternoon.
SMU, which has come up on the short end of too many three-set matches this season, wasn't about to let it happen again against the Falcons as
Beth Carroll (Chicago, Ill.) posted a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles, while Liz Hilke (Baraboo, Wis.) followed that up with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win at No. 6.
Allison Ast (Conway Springs, Kan.) and
Jennifer Duffy (Chicago, Ill.) took the more conventional route to their singles wins, posting 6-1, 7-5 and 7-5, 6-2 victories at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.
Nicole Hilo (Mendota Heights, Minn.) and
Joni Peterson (New London, Minn.) teamed for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles, while Ast and Carroll were 8-1 winners at No. 3 doubles.
The win snapped a two-match losing streak for the Cardinals, who improved to 5-9 overall.
