Blazers hand Cardinals 6-3 MIAC setback

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — For the third straight match, the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team was involved in a 6-3 decision Saturday afternoon.

Unfortunately, for the second time in those three matches, the Cardinals came out on the short end as St. Benedict took advantage of a pair of wins in the doubles en route to the 6-3 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory.

Allison Ast (Conway Springs, Kan.) and Beth Carroll (Chicago, Ill.) each posted straight-set singles wins, with Ast winning 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3, while Carroll was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at No. 5. Problem was, the rest of the Cardinals' singles players were also involved in straight-set matches — only none of the other four managed to come out on the winning end.

Dena Bing (Cannon Falls, Minn.) and Angie Beissel (Hastings, Minn.) accounted for SMU's other victory, posting a 9-7 win at No. 3 doubles.

The SMU men's team didn't find the going any easier, as the Cardinals dropped their eighth straight conference match, 9-0 to St. John's.

The Johnnies swept all six singles matches in straight sets, and did not allow more than four points in rolling through the three doubles matches. SMU's Mark Leeder (Milwaukee, Wis.) lost a 7-5 tiebreaker in the second set of his 6-1, 7-6 loss at No. 1 singles, while Jeff Dobbs (Pipestone, Minn.) suffered a similar fate at No. 5 singles, falling 7-6 (7-1), 6-1.
