WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University baseball team didn't exactly hit the cover off the ball Monday afternoon in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Carleton at Max Molock Field.

In fact, the Cardinals managed just six hits in the two games — including just one in Game 2.

And they still managed to come away with two wins.

Cory Kanz (Oronoco, Minn.) tossed a complete-game three-hitter, and SMU took advantage of three Carleton errors en route to a 3-2 win in Game 1 — a win that gave Coach Nick Whaley his 100th collegiate coaching win. Tony Cicalello (St. Paul, Minn.) accounted for the Cardinals' lone hit — a fifth-inning double — and SMU again made the most of the Knights' three miscues in completing the sweep with a 2-1 win in the nightcap.

With the sweep, the Cardinals (13-14 overall) improved to 11-7 in the MIAC, and remaining in the thick of a seven-team race for the conference's four post-season tournament berths. Carleton, meanwhile, fell to 7-21 overall and 4-11 in the MIAC.

SMU jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the second inning of the first game, getting an RBI sacrifice fly from Seth Pugh (Crystal, Minn.) and an RBI single from Aaron Smolinski (White Bear Lake, Minn.). Carleton tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, but SMU regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning when David McMahon (Coon Rapids, Minn.) scored on an error by Carleton catcher Noah Brenner.

Andy Ebert (Winona, Minn.) picked up where Kanz left off in the nightcap, taking a three-hitter, and a 2-0 advantage, into the seventh inning. A one-out error by McMahon and a hit batsman, however, forced Whaley to go to his closer, Chuck Wright (Winona, Minn.). Wright got Gunnar Stapp to ground back to him, but his throw to second was wide of the mark, loading the bases. Bryan Nelson grounded out to second to score Carleton's lone run, and Ron Kimlinger (Lake Elmo, Minn.) made a stellar play deep in the hole at short to get Will Nissen at first to end the threat, and the game.
