WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team found itself in an all-too-familiar position Tuesday afternoon in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against Hamline.
For the fourth straight time, and the sixth time in their last seven matches, the Cardinals were involved in a match decided by a 5-4 decision.
Unfortunately, for the second straight time — and the third time in the last four — SMU came out on the short end, as the Pipers posted wins in four of the six singles matches to slip past the Cardinals 5-4 at the St. T's Tennis & Sports courts.
The Cardinals (0-6 MIAC, 4-9 overall) picked up wins in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, as
Mark Leeder (Milwaukee, Wis.) and
Bryan Haville (Onalaska, Wis.) teamed for an 8-3 win at No. 2, and
Jeff Dobbs (Pipestone, Minn.) and
Chad Boyer (Albert Lea, Minn.) were 8-6 winners at No. 3.
Things didn't go quite as smoothly in the singles portion, however.
Geoff Granseth (Winona, Minn.) and Haville were straight-set winners for the Cardinals at No. 1 and No. 4 singles, respectively, but SMU failed to pick up the final point — dropping three-set matches by Leeder at No. 2 and Boyer at No. 6, while Dobbs was beaten in straight sets at No. 5.
