ST. PAUL, Minn. — Records fell by the handful — almost — for the Saint Mary's University track and field team at the St. Thomas Invitational Tuesday afternoon.
The Cardinals shattered four school records at the event, SMU's second outdoor meet of the season.
Jenny Folgers (McHenry, Ill.) hurdled her way to a pair of new school marks, clocking a first-place time of 1:07.30 in the 400 hurdles and a second-place time of 16.51 in the 100 hurdles. Ashley Dingels (Gibbon, Minn.) chipped in a second-place effort in the 200 (27.36) and a third-place showing in the 100 hurdles (17.18). Assumpta Mbele (Northfield, Minn.) also had a strong meet for the SMU women, placing third in the 400 with a time of 1:02.38.
Shawn Stewart (McHenry, Ill.) and Chris Beach (Maple Grove, Minn.) accounted for SMU's other two record-setting performances, as Stewart finished third in the 400 hurdles with a school-record time of 57.53, while Beach was fifth in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 12-6.
The Cardinals' 4 x 100 relay team added a fourth-place showing, as Jon Bell (Ogden, Utah), Dwyne Smith (Burnsville, Minn.), Stewart and Todd Yankowski (Chicago, Ill.) broke the tape in 44.64.
