Game Summary
MENOMONIE, Wis. — For the third straight time, the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team went up against a Wisconsin state school. And, unfortunately for the Cardinals, the third time was no charm.
UW-Stout scored a pair of goals three minutes apart early in the second half to hand SMU its third straight shutout loss, 2-0.
The Blue Devils, who improved to 3-1 overall, outshot the Cardinals 9-0 over the game's opening 45 minutes, but failed to get one past SMU goalkeeper Emily Strom (Waterford, Wis.). UW-Stout continued to swarm the Cardinal goal in the second half, pelting Strom with 14 second-half shots, including goals by Stacy Normington at the 47-minute mark, and by Diane Ehlen three minutes later.
SMU's offense, meanwhile, remained nonexistent, managing just one second-half shot on goal. In the season's first three games, the Cardinals — who were beaten by UW-Oshkosh 9-0 in their season opener and 5-0 by UW-River Falls last Sunday — have managed just six shots on goal.
