Game Summary

LA CROSSE, Wis. — They may be freshmen in the classroom, but they sure don't play like freshmen on the soccer field.

Nate Pattee (Winona, Minn.), playing in his first collegiate game, scored two goals and fellow freshman Mike Boland (Lake Zurich, Ill.) added another as the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team opened its season with a 3-1 nonconference win over Viterbo Monday.

Pattee sandwiched his two goals around Boland's as SMU jumped out to a 3-0 lead midway through the second half. Freshmen Adam Sapp (Winona, Minn.) and Andy Kozar (Libertyville, Ill.) were credited with assists, as was sophomore Brian Reddish (Crystal Lake, Ill.).

Viterbo finally got on the board in the 85th minute, foiling SMU goalie Bob Endemann's (Woodridge, Ill.) shutout bid. Endemann finished with four saves, while SMU peppered Viterbo goalie Shane Lanning with 16 shots.
