WINONA, Minn. — What a difference a day makes.
Make that, less than a day.
Less than 24 hours after a rather mediocre showing in a triple dual against St. Thomas and St. Catherine, the Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams rebounded with a rather impressive showing against Macalester in a dual meet at the Jul Gernes Pool.
"Today was definitely a much better performance than we showed (Friday night)," said SMU coach
Eric Lindquist, whose men's team defeated the visiting Scots 93-72, while the women's team dropped a hard-fought 138-91 decision. "I was glad to see us rebound like that, after not swimming up to our abilities against St. Thomas and St. Catherine the night before."
Coming off a disappointing 53-45 loss to the Tommies, the SMU men once again hopped on the backs of divers
Erik Oksnevad (Blaine, Minn.) and
Kevin Jepsen (Downers Grove, Ill.) en route to its first dual-meet win of the season.
Oksnevad won both the one-meter (262.35) and three-meter (250.0), while Jepsen was second in both events (254.35 in the one-meter and 247.70 in the three-meter).
Sean Gibson (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in a first-place effort in the 50 freestyle, turning in a season-best time of 23.58, while Chris Lundeen (St. Paul, Minn.) was first in the 100 freestyle (56.76) and
Scott Schultz (Carry, Ill.) won the 200 backstroke in 2:10.14.
Not to be outdone by their male counterparts, women's divers Ellen Meloy (Rochester, Minn.) and Holly Fujii (Elk Grove, Ill.) were impressive in placing first and second in the three-meter competition (204.94 and 199.15, respectively), and second and third in the one-meter event (197.60, 187.80, respectively).
Lindsay DeLaRosby (Two Harbors, Minn.) chipped in a second-place effort in the 50 freestyle (26.86), while the women's 200 freestyle relay team of DeLaRosby, Becca Grube (Appleton, Wis.), Heidi Andre (Fairbanks, Alaska) and Louise Turnquist (Woodbury, Minn.) earned first-place honors with a time of 1:53.94.
"I was very pleased with our performance — swimming competitively on back-to-back days is tough, but I thought we did a pretty good job," said Lindquist, noting that this was a good sampling of what to expect when his teams take part in the season-ending MIAC Championships. "Some of these people haven't competed on back-to-back days like that, but when we get to the conference meet, we go three days in a row, so this was a nice chance for everyone to get a feel for what it's like."
