Box Score Game Summary
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — After pushing his team-leading assist total to 15 with helpers on the first two goals the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team scored Saturday evening, Chad Damerow (Albert Lea, Minn.) finally decided the time was right to be on the receiving end.
Damerow finally scored his first goal of the season at the 6:35 mark of the second period Saturday — one of four second-period goals scored by the Cardinals, as they cruised to a 6-2 nonconference win over UW-Eau Claire.
After a scoreless first period, the Cardinals wasted little time getting their offense cranked up, scoring three times in the first seven minutes of the second period.
Al Schumacher (Oakdale, Minn.) opened the scoring with his team-leading 14th goal of the season two minutes into the period. Colin Emans (Hutchinson, Minn.) and Damerow followed suit, scoring 25 seconds apart. Chris Flaugher (St. Louis, Minn.) kept the ball rolling, getting the first of his two goals at the 11-minute mark to give SMU a commanding 4-0 advantage.
The Blugolds managed to cut the lead to three, 4-1, as UW-Eau Claire's Kuzma Kurakin beat SMU goalie Curtis Nosal (Omaha, Neb.) before the second period ended.
Flaugher and B.J. Gaustad (Portland, Ore.) padded the Cardinals' lead to 6-1, before the Blugolds' Joe Bryd scored a meaningless goal with 18 seconds remaining to make the final 6-2.
Nosal finished with 25 saves for the Cardinals, who improved to 9-3-0 overall and return to action Sunday, traveling to Stevens Point, Wis., to take on UW-Stevens Point in their final nonconference game of the season.
