Game Summary

WINONA, Minn. — Consistency.

It's what Saint Mary's University men's basketball coach Bob Biebel has been looking for all season.

And he's still looking.

The Cardinals shot just 37 percent from the field, as Macalester pulled away in the second half en route to a 66-56 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win Wednesday evening at the SMU gym.

The Cardinals, who struggled from the free throw line in dropping a 71-60 decision to Carleton on Monday, had little trouble from the charity stripe this time around, hitting 7 of 10 free throw attempts.

It was the other line — the 3-point line — that proved to be the Cardinals' downfall this time around.

SMU connected on just 7 of 24 3-point attempts in losing for the second straight time.

Jim Wangler (Wheaton, Ill.) scored a team-high 16 points for the Cardinals, who trailed 28-26 at the half, never got any closer in the second half, as Macalester slowly pulled away en route to its second win in its last three games. Nick Michaels (Dyer, Ind.) chipped in 10 points in the losing effort.

Ben Van Thorre led four Macalester players in double figures, scoring a game-high 17 points. Erik Johnson chipped in 13 points, while Adam Denny added 12 and Patrick Russell finished with 11.
