Week off pays huge dividends for SMU

Game Summary

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. — When Eric Luzzi looked at his Saint Mary's University men's soccer schedule and saw that he had a week seven straight days between games against Concordia and Bethel, he couldn't help but smile.

One whole week to prepare for one game — now that was heaven to Luzzi.

Add to that the fact that SMU had all week to think about last Saturday's 2-1 loss to Concordia, and Luzzi knew his Cardinals would be ready when they took the field Saturday against Bethel.

Were they ever.

The Cardinals got a first-half goal from Michael Schmitt (Woodridge, Ill.) and held the host Royals to just two shots on goal en route to a 1-0 MIAC victory.

Tyler Nelson (Racine, Wis.) stopped both Royal shots to pick up the shutout, his second of the season. The Cardinals, who moved to 2-3-1 in the MIAC and 2-8-1 overall with the win, finished with six shots on goal.
