Four's more than enough as SMU men top Pipers

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Four. That number is going to be the topic of conversation all season for the Saint Mary's University men's swimming and diving team.

Saturday afternoon in their dual meet against Hamline, however, the number four had nothing to do with the number of swimmers on the Cardinal men's roster.

This time, the number four was the amount of first-place individual finishes SMU racked up. Combine that with the first-place effort in the final event of the day — the 200 freestyle relay — and it added up to the Cardinals' first dual-meet win of the season.

"Those four guys have swam well all season, and they just continued to impress today," said SMU coach Eric Lindquist of his men's squad of Brian Travers (Chicago, Ill.), Sean Gibson (Chicago, Ill.), Tony Gruenke (Sheboygan, Wis.) and Logan Twedt (Hastings, Minn.), who edged the Pipers 68-62. "Winning nearly every event we were entered in certainly helped us come out on top — those first-place points add up in a hurry."

Things didn't go by quite the same script for the SMU women, who dropped a 110-76 decision to the Pipers.

"We were short a few of our swimmers (on the women's side) because of injuries," said Lindquist. "But everyone else picked up the slack and swam extremely well."

Lindsay DeLaRosby (Two Harbors, Minn.) led the way for the women, placing first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 27.28. The Cardinal junior also placed second in the 100 freestyle (1:01.6), while Heidi Andre (Fairbanks, Alaska) recorded seconds in the 1,000 freestyle (12:05.50) and the 500 free (5:57.43). Victoria Evans (Junction City, Ore.) chipped in a second in the 100 butterfly (1:10.10) and Toni Nigrelli (Kiel, Wis.) was second in the 200 IM (2:35.81).

On the men's side, Travers was first in the 200 free (2:01.86) and the 500 free (5:34.20), while Twedt was first in the 1,000 free (11:10.90) and Gruenke was first in the 200 IM (2:24.60. Gibson, meanwhile, added seconds in the 50 free (23.35) and the 100 free (52.20).

More important than any of those individual times, however, was the foursome's performance in the 200 freestyle relay, where they clocked a dual meet-winning time of 1:37.03).

"This was a great meet for everyone," Lindquist said. "And to get the (dual meet) win is just the frosting on the cake."
