WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams picked up right where they left off a week ago, collecting nine first-place finishes in their nonconference dual with Luther Friday at the Jul Gernes Pool.
Unfortunately, while the Cardinals were notching a win here and another there, the Norse were taking advantage of their superior depth to sweep through the rest of the events en route to a pair of dual-meet victories.
"We went into the meet a bit lighthearted — it was our first home meet and we were of the attitude that we had nothing to lose, just go out and swim as best we can," said SMU coach
Eric Lindquist. "And I thought the plan worked pretty well."
Pretty well?
Nine swimmers had times that ranked in their personal top four, which, according to Lindquist, means the Cardinals are already ahead of schedule — and the season is just two weeks old.
"We're seeing some great times for this early in the season," said Lindquist. "We've got people approaching some taper times that usually only appear at the MIAC (Championships at the end of the season)."
Ellen Melloy (Rochester, Minn.) picked up a pair of first-place finishes in the diving competition, winning the one-meter with 191.00 points, while also taking first in the three-meter with 200.35 points.
Lindsay DeLaRosby (Two Harbors, Minn.) chipped in a first in the 50 freestyle (26.74), while
Victoria Evans (Junction City, Ore.) was first in the 100 butterfly (1:08.52) and
Heidi Andre (Fairbanks, Alaska) was second in both the 500 (5:55.26) and 1,000 freestyle (12:03.48).
Logan Twedt (Hastings, Minn.) led the way for the men, winning the 1,000 freestyle (10:58.76), while finishing second in the 500 (5:21.70). Sean Gibson (Chicago, Ill.) was victorious in the 50 freestyle (23.17), while Tony Gruenke (Sheboygan, Wis.) won the 100 butterfly (1:02.45).
"Despite the final scores, this was a fun meet for us," said Lindquist. "Everyone worked hard, and their times showed that, you can have fun and swim fast, too."
