WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team put everything it had into Friday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against St. Thomas.
And while SMU came out on the short end of an 8-1 decision, it certainly wasn't for a lack of effort.
Problem is, the Cardinals expensed so much energy against the Tommies, when the took the court Saturday morning to face nationally ranked and MIAC power Gustavus, there was nothing left in the tank.
And Gustavus made them pay.
The Gusties won all six singles matches in straight sets, not losing more than three games in any set, while added wins of 8-4, 8-0 and 8-2 in the three doubles matches en route to the 9-0 MIAC win.
"After last night's effort against St. Thomas, we just came out flat (against Gustavus)," said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg, whose men fall to 1-1 in the MIAC and 1-2 overall. "You have to give Gustavus a lot of credit, they are an excellent, excellent tennis team. They are tough to beat when you're fresh — trying to play them on tired legs was not a good thing."
