Box Score Game Summary
WINONA, Minn. — In their first four meetings with St. Olaf, the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team had little trouble posting a perfect 4-0 record.
No, make that, the Cardinals manhandled the Oles in the teams' first four meetings.
After all, the Cardinals outshot the Oles 230-33 — and outscored them 30-0.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, that was then, and this is now.
Jennifer Welch scored less than two minutes into overtime as St. Olaf not only scored once against SMU, but the Oles scored three times — including Welch's overtime game-winner — as St. Olaf shocked the Cardinals 3-2 Saturday afternoon at the SMU Ice Arena.
St. Olaf (8-6-2 MIAC, 10-10-3 overall) scored a pair of powerplay goals two minutes apart midway through the first period to take a 2-0 advantage, with SMU's Emily Kearns (Hopkins, Minn.) cutting the gap to 2-1 with a powerplay goal of her own before the first period ended.
Kearns netted her second of the game less than a minute into the second peirod, but that was all the scoring the teams could muster — until Welch's OT heroics.
St. Olaf outshot the Cardinals 24-23, including 11-5 in the opening period. SMU, meanwhile, peppered St. Olaf goalie Kerry Rollwagen with 14 second-period shots, but could only manage the one goal.
