Game Summary
WINONA, Minn. — When the Saint Mary's University women's basketball team faced Carleton the first time around, the Cardinals could not do anything right.
SMU struggled from the field all night, shooting just 22 percent from the floor (11-for-48). The Cardinals' top three scorers, Jamie Rattunde (Rollingstone, Minn), Jaimie Lee (Eden Prairie, Minn. ) and Ashley Luehmann (Lewiston, Minn.) — who all entered the game averaging in double figures — managed just 11 points combined.
Carleton scored the game's opening basket, and 16 of the game's first 18 points, and never looked back as the Knights cruised to a 78-37 triumph on Jan. 6.
Wednesday evening, the Cardinals were looking for a little payback — or at least a chance to prove that that 41-point loss was nothing more than a fluke.
The Cardinals' offense was certainly better, as Rattunde scored a game-high 17 points as SMU scored 51 on the night.
And defensively, SMU was much more stingy, holding Carleton to 45 percent shooting.
Unfortunately, that 45 percent shooting resulted in 67 total points as Carleton pushed its perfect record to 20-0 with a 67-51 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win at the SMU gym.
Carleton led by as many as eight in the first half, before settling for a seven-point, 32-25 halftime advantage. A 14-3 Carleton run late in the second half pushed the Knights' lead to 18, before SMU netted the game's final basket for the 16-point margin.
Rattunde was the long Cardinal in double figures, as SMU dropped its second straight and fell to 8-9 in the MIAC and 8-12 overall. Karissa Kramer scored 15 points and Angie Grabowski added 10 for the Knights.
