Game Summary

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — On Jan. 4, the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team kicked off the 2003 portion of its schedule with a 72-67 victory over St. John's.

Thirty-three days later, the Cardinals squared of against the Johnnies for a second time — still searching for their second win of the new year.

And, unfortunately for the Cardinals, an 18-point first half didn't help their cause as St. John's raced to a 38-18 first-half lead and cruised to a 72-52 victory over SMU, handing the Cardinals their 12th straight loss.

The Cardinals shot just 24 percent from the field in the first half, making 7 of 29 field goal attempts — four of which came from beyond the three-point line. SJU, meanwhile, shot a blistering 53 percent from the field (14-for-26) in the first half, and got even hotter in the second, connecting on 14 of 24 field goal attempts (58 percent).

Ryan Wilt (Naperville, Ill.) scored 13 points and Lance Larson (Lakeville, Minn.) added 10 for the Cardinals (2-14 MIAC, 2-19 overall). Shawn McGuire scored a game-high 21 points for the Johnnies, who beat SMU for the 35th straight time on their home floor.
