Eagles take advantage of Cardinals' "off" day

WINONA, Minn. — Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, you just don't have what it takes to come away a winner.

Tuesday was one of those days for the Saint Mary's University men's tennis team.

"We just came out flat and never really got into any type of rhythm," said SMU coach Jeff Halberg of his team's 8-1 nonconference loss to UW-La Crosse. "Give (La Crosse) credit, they are a very deep team and they never let up. They didn't give us much breathing room."

Tyler Stevenson (Neenah, Wis.) picked up the lone win for the Cardinals, posting a 6-2, 6-4 triumph at No. 1 singles. UW-L won the other five singles matches in straight sets, while also blowing away SMU in the three doubles matches.

"The effort was there — we showed some fighting spirit when we were down," admitted Halberg. "We just didn't have it today."
