MOORHEAD, Minn. —
Jeff Halberg knew there were going to be days like this.
No matter what the Saint Mary's University tennis teams tried in their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matches against Concordia Saturday, the Cobbers always had an answer.
An answer the Cardinals didn't want to hear.
Concordia picked up wins in five of the singles matches en route to a 7-2 win over the SMU men, while the Cobbers picked up three singles and a pair of doubles wins in completing the sweep with a 5-4 win over the Cardinal women.
"It was one of those days when you feel that, no matter what you do, the ball just isn't going to bounce your way," said Halberg, whose women's team lost one singles match in a second-set tiebreaker, and another 10-4 in third and decisive set. "A bounce here or there, and those two matches alone are enough to carry us to the win. You have to give Concordia credit, they just refused to quit and they deserved their wins."
Nicole Hilo (Mendota Heights, Minn.), Cassie Czech (Foley, Minn.) and Angie Beissel (Hastings, Minn.) were victorious in singles play for SMU, while Joni Peterson (New London, Minn.) and Allison Ast (Conway Springs, Kan.) teamed up for an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles.
On the men's side,
Mark Leeder (Greenfield, Wis.) won SMU's lone singles match, posting a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles, then joined forces with
Tyler Stevenson (Neenah, Wis.) for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles.
"The (men's) match was a lot closer than the final score indicates," Halberg said. "Mark had an awesome day, and we had a number of matches that really could have gone either way. Concordia just played some good tennis under pressure."
