WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University tennis coach
Jeff Halberg knows that consistency is going to be a key to the success of his Cardinals women's team.
Sunday afternoon against Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference power Gustavus, the Cardinals were consistent — but it wasn't the type of consistency Halberg was looking for.
the Gusties won all six singles matches in straight sets — with SMU winning more than two games in just three of the 12 sets — as Gustavus handed the Cardinals a 9-0 setback.
"We played some pretty good tennis in the doubles to get off on a positive note, but in singles, (Gustavus) showed us why they are a nationally ranked team," said Halberg, who saw his No. 1 doubles team of
Joni Peterson (New London, Minn.) and Amanda Clarke (Omaha, Neb.) fall 8-6, while
Nicole Hilo (Mendota Heights, Minn.)-
Anna Tomes (Stillwater, Minn.) and Angie Beissel (Hastings, Minn.)-
Cassie Czech (Foley, Minn.) dropped 8-2 and 8-3 decisions at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively. "We have to improve our consistency on the singles court if we are going to be competitive this season."
