Cardinals bounce back to beat Martin Luther

WINONA, Minn. — After dropping a 5-4 heartbreaker to Concordia in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match last Sunday, what the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team needed more than anything was a boost of confidence.

And Martin Luther was more than happy to oblige.

The Cardinals won all six singles matches — including five in straight sets — and cruised to easy wins in the three doubles matches en route to a 9-0 nonconference win Thursday.

"This match gave us a chance to play the whole squad, which was kind of a nice change for everyone after the tough loss (vs. Concordia)," said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. "Everyone put in a great effort, and now they'll have a chance to get a few days rest before the really tough part of the season starts."

Joni Peterson (New London, Minn.), Amanda Clark (Waseca, Minn.), Cassie Czech (Foley, Minn.), Emily Strom (Waterford, Wis.) and Michele Clarke (Omaha, Neb.) all posted straight-set singles wins, while Liz Hilke (Baraboo, Wis.) was taken the distance before coming away with a 6-2, 0-6, 10-3 win at No. 5 singles.

In doubles, Nicole Hilo (Mendota Heights, Minn.) and Clark rolled to an 8-1 win at No. 1, while Angie Beissel (Hastings, Minn.) and Jennifer Duffy (Chicago, Ill.) were 8-0 winners at No. 2, and Anna Tomes (Stillwater, Minn.) and Allison Ast (Conway Springs, Kan.) were 8-3 winners at No. 3.
