WINONA, Minn. — Coming off an 8-1 victory over UM-Morris on Saturday — the Saint Mary's University men's tennis team's second straight win —
Jeff Halberg thought his Cardinals might just give St. Scholastica a run for their money when the two teams squared off Sunday morning.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the only thing running was Saints, as they ran SMU ragged en route to a 7-2 nonconference victory.
"St. Scholastica has only lost two matches this year – and I can see why," said Halberg. "Their No. 2 and No. 3 players were especially tough — both mentally and physically.
"They just had a little too much for us."
Tyler Stevenson (Neenah, Wis.) had a hand in both SMU wins vs. the mighty Saints, picking up a 7-6 (3), 6-3 win at No. 1 singles, then teaming with
Mark Leeder (Greenfield, Wis.) for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles.
"We've got some things we need to work on," admitted Halberg, whose men's team dropped to 4-5 overall. "But my players are definitely talented enough to make those adjustments.
"We'll just keep working at it."
