WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team had not competed in a week — since an impressive 9-0 win over Martin Luther last Thursday.
The Cardinals certainly didn't show any signs of rust when they played host to UW-Stout Thursday at St. T's Tennis and Sports.
In fact, the Cardinals looked eerily similar to a week ago, as they cruised to their second straight 9-0 nonconference win.
"We played well," said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg, whose team improved to 4-5 overall with the win. "Stout is a little down this year, so the match was a bit more one-sided that we had expected. But hopefully we can take some of the confidence we got from this match into Saturday's match against St. Ben's.
"That match promised to be a real challenge."
There wasn't much of a challenge against the Blue Devils, as SMU won five of the six singles matches in straight sets. In fact, the Cardinals only dropped six games in the 10 sets. Liz Hilke (Baraboo, Wis.) found the going a bit more difficult at No. 6 singles, where she needed three sets to win 1-6, 6-3, 11-9.
It was more of the same in doubles, as SMU dropped just three games in winning 8-2, 8-0 and 8-1.
