HILTON HEAD, S.C. — With their spring break occurring so late in the season, Saint Mary's University tennis coach Jeff Halberg couldn't use his teams' spring trip as an early-season chance to prepare his team ready for the rigors of the regular season.

So he did the next best thing — he used the trip as a chance for his teams to fine-tune their games for the season-ending Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships.

And if their performance during their week away from home is any indication, the Cardinals are primed and ready.

The SMU women completed a 2-1 spring trip effort with their second 9-0 victory of the trip, this one coming against Cabrini. The sailing wasn't quite as smooth for the SMU men, but the result was the same as the Cardinals came away with a 5-4 win over Cabrini.

The Cardinal women, who close out their regular-season with a nonconference match against UW-River Falls on Wednesday before heading to St. Peter, Minn., for the conference championships, had little trouble improving to 7-11 overall, as they won all six singles matches against Cabrini in straight sets. Cassie Czech (Foley, Minn.) won 7-5 in the first set of her No. 2 singles match, but that was the only match in which SMU lost more than three games.

The men, meanwhile, needed a sweep of the three doubles matches en route to their eighth win of the season. Tyler Stevenson (Neenah, Wis.) and Mark Leeder (Greenfield, Wis.) teamed for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles, while Geoff Granseth (Winona, Minn.)-Bryan Haville (Onalaska, Wis.) won 9-7 at No. 2 and Andrew Pamperin (Menomonie, Wis.)-Kevin Wrisky (Minneapolis, Minn.) were 8-3 winners at No. 3.

Leeder and Granseth picked up SMU's two singles wins, with Leeder going three sets to post a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (1) win at No. 2, while Granseth won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3.
