WINONA, Minn. — The start of a very busy week didn't go exactly the way Saint Mary's University women's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg had hoped.
With four matches scheduled in a five-day span, Halberg was hoping his Cardinals would get off on the right foot Wednesday against cross-town rival Winona State.
The Warriors, however, had other ideas, as Winona State won five of the sixth singles matches — all in straight sets – en route to a 7-2 nonconfernece win over SMU at St. T's Tennis & Sports.
"We ran into a very solid Winona State team," admitted Halberg, whose team dropped its second straight in falling to 4-7 overall. "It wasn't that our players let up or anything, (Winona State) was just relentless and refused to let us into the match."
Angie Beissel (Hastings, Minn.) had a part in both SMU wins, posting a three-set, 7-6 (7), 2-6, 10-8 win at No. 6 singles, then teamed with
Jennifer Duffy (Chicago, Ill.) for an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
"The key now is to put this match behind us," said Halberg. "Hopefully we can just regroup and come out firing against St. Olaf (on Friday)."
