NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Two proved to be the magic number for the Saint Mary's University baseball team last week.
Back-to-back doubleheaders — twice.
Back-to-back one-run losses (1-0 and 2-1 vs. St. Thomas).
Two extra-inning games (1-0 loss to UST in nine innings and a 3-2, 11-inning win over St. Olaf).
Seven runs scored in back-to-back wins over Bethel (7-2 and 7-0).
And, thanks to a pair of lopsided victories over Carleton on Sunday, two straight, two-game sweeps.
Fresh off their MIAC sweep of Bethel on Saturday, the Cardinals extended their season-high winning streak to four games (two times two) Sunday, crushing the Knights twice, 15-1 and 10-2.
Tony Cicalello (St. Paul, Minn.) led a 19-hit SMU attack in the opener, going 4-for-5 with three doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored.
Matt Domarus (Woodbury, Minn.) chipped in a 3-for-4 performance that included a two-run home run, and
Ryan Majerus (St. Charles, Minn.),
Matt Rink (Rochester, Minn.) and
Dan Cosgrove (North St. Paul, Minn.) all collected two hits.
Through the first three innings of the opener, it appeared the Cardinals were going to need to rely heavily on the arm of pitcher
Eric Williamson (St. Charles, Minn.).
After all, SMU managed just three hits, and one run — on a sacrifice fly by
Rob Kimlinger (Lake Elmo, Minn.) in the first.
Then came the third inning — and what a third inning it was.
SMU erupted for seven runs on eight hits, and took advantage of a pair of Carleton errors, to transform a one-run nailbiter into an 8-0 laugher.
And, unfortunately for the Knights, the Cardinals were just getting started.
SMU added two more runs in the sixth on Cicalello's two-run double, then plated five more in the seventh — highlighted by Domarus' two-run home run and a two-run double by Majerus — to close out the Cardinals' highest offensive output of the season.
It was more of the same for the Cardinals in the nightcap, as SMU scored a single run in the first and six more in the fourth — sparked by
Troy Deden's (Northfield, Minn.) three-run triple — to take a 7-0 advantage.
After surrendering a single run in the bottom of the fourth, the Cardinals added one run in the fifth on an RBI double by Majerus, and scored twice more in the seventh on Rink's two-run home run.
