NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball team found itself on two separate roads during its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against St. Olaf.
Fortunately for the Cardinals, both roads led to the same place.
SMU took the high road in the opener, scoring four runs in each of the first two innings en route to a 9-0, five-inning victory.
In the nightcap, the Cardinals found themselves on the low road, waiting until the fifth inning to get on the board. But once the Cardinals plated that first run, the floodgates opened and SMU never looked back, erupting for five runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and six in the seventh in completing the sweep with a 13-0 win.
Niki Lynch (Winona, Minn.) and Jackie Huegel (Alta Vista, Iowa) led the Cardinals' 12-hit offensive attack in the opener, as the seniors both went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and two RBIs.
Amy Edge (Mineral Point, Wis.) was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs to lead the Cardinals' charge in the nightcap. Krista Conway (Mendota Heights, Minn.) was 3-for-4, while Huegel and Jenny Schipp (North St. Paul, Minn.) each chipped in two hits.
Pitchers Jennifer Gonerka (St. Paul, Minn.) and Schipp combined on the four-hit shutout in Game 1, while Hanni Lohmann (Lake Elmo, Minn.) and Schipp teamed on a five-hitter in Game 2.
