Cardinals bounce back with sweep of Scots

ST. PAUL, Minn. — If the Saint Mary's University baseball team was saddled with any ill effects from Tuesday's one-hit, 2-0 loss to St. John's, they certainly didn't show it on Macalester.

Which was good news for the Cardinals — and bad news for the Scots.

Very bad news.

Pat Gornick (West St. Paul, Minn.) homered in each game — including a three-run, game-winning shot in the fifth inning of the nightcap — and drove in eight runs as SMU cruised to an 11-2, 7-5 sweep of Macalester.

Big innings were key for the Cardinals, who scored seven runs in the fifth inning to break open a one-run game in the opener, then used a six-run fifth inning — fueled by Gornick's two-out, three-run shot — to erase a 5-1 Macalester lead and give the Cardinals the key MIAC sweep.

The Cardinals, who managed just one hit — a first-inning single by Matt Rink (Rochester, Minn.) in a disappointing 1-0 Game 2 loss to St. John's on Tuesday — were back to their free-swinging ways in the opener against Macalester.

Tony Cicalello (St. Paul, Minn.) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Gornick led five other SMU players with two hits, as the Cardinals hammered 14 hits off four Macalester pitchers. Macalester, meanwhile, managed just three hits off SMU's Chuck Wright (Winona, Minn.), who did not allow an earned run, while striking out three in improving his overall record to 3-0 with his first complete game of the season.

The hits weren't quite as easy to come by for the Cardinals in the nightcap, however, as SMU scored its seven runs on just four hits — three of which came in the decisive fifth inning.

Trailing 5-1, the Cardinals began chipping away, scoring their first run on an RBI single by Cicalello, then making it 5-3 on a sacrifice fly by Rink. An error by Macalester shortstop Andrew Percival allowed Cicalello to score SMU's third run of the inning and make it a 5-4 game. Gornick then gave SMU the lead for good, belting his second home run of the day over the right-center field fence.
