CANTON, N.Y. — It wasn't a record-setting performance, but for Saint Mary's University track and field star
Ashley Dingels, the second time around was certainly more memorable.
A year after breaking her foot in the first even of the heptathlon at the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships — and fueled by a record-setting performance at this season's MIAC Outdoor Championships two weeks ago — Dingels was once again back on the nation's top stage.
And this time, there were no early-race disasters.
The second time around was sweeter — much sweeter.
Thanks to a first-place effort in the shot put, Dingels placed seventh in the 20-person heptathlon field Friday afternoon, finishing with 4,456 points. Calvin College senior Annie Vanderlaan won the even with a 4,852 total. while Central's Raegan Schultz was second (4,803) and Tufts' Jessica Trombly was third (4,773).
Dingels won the shot put during Thursday's opening day of competition, finishing with a toss of 39-11 1/4, then added fourth-place finishes in the 100 hurdles (16.11) and the 200 (27.26), and a fifth in the high jump (5-1 3/4). On Friday, Dingels was 16th in the long jump with a leap of 15-2 1/4, and was 12th in both the javelin (98-1) and 800 (2:25.10).
