SMU opens River City with win vs. Coe

Match Summary

DUBUQUE, Iowa — It took a little longer than Mike Lester had hoped, but the Saint Mary's University volleyball team accomplished its mission Friday evening at the River City Classic — two wins.

The Cardinals needed five games to dispatch of Coe in the opening-round game, 30-21, 26-30, 26-30, 30-19, 15-13, but then quickly tore through Clarke 30-16, 30-25, 30-18 in their second game.

Kirstan Rouzer (Comstock, Ill.) led the way for the Cardinals against Coe, collecting 20 kills, 23 digs and three blocks. Tracy Koertgen (Crystal Lake, Ill.) chipped in 17 kills, four aces and five blocks, while Molli Dant (Forest City, Iowa) tallied nine kills and Katie Christensen (Crystal Lake, Ill.) added nine blocks.

Koertgen led the way against Clarke, notching 12 kills, while
Ashley Danielson (Cadott, Wis.) finished with 10 kills and two aces. Tessa Stranik (Eatonville, Wash.) dished out 95 assists in the two matches, including 54 against Coe and 41 against Clarke.

The two wins extended the Cardinals' winning streak to eight games and moved SMU to 8-2 overall heading into today's final two matches of the two-day tournament.
