SMU's offense returns to hibernation

Game Summary

OSHKOSH, Wis. — After starting the season without a goal in its first two games, the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team erupted for five goals – three more than they scored all of last season — en route to a 5-1 victory over Marian on Friday.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, their offense returned to hibernation faster than Punxsutawney Phil after seeing his shadow.

UW-Oshkosh erupted for four goals in a 10-minute span to start the second half in cruising to a 6-0 nonconference win over the Cardinals.

"Oshkosh is one of the top teams in our region," said SMU coach Dan Blank. "We knew going in that (beating the Titans) was going to be a tall order, but I thought we played hard and gave it everything they had."

UW-Oshkosh opened the scoring at the eight-minute mark of the first half, then added another seven minutes later, as the Titans took a 2-0 advantage into the halftime break.

Then came the second half.

"It was like we couldn't do anything to stop them (at the start of the second half)," said Blank of the Titans' four-goal outburst. "Those four goals just took the wind right out of our sails.

"It was so good to see us get our offense going (vs. Marian), it would have been nice to see us keep that going (against Oshkosh)."

Let's just hope this loss doesn't mean six more weeks of goalless soccer.
