ST. PAUL, Minn. — When the Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams took to the pool Friday evening at St. Thomas, it marked the first time since Dec. 5, 2003, that the Cardinals had competed.
You certainly could not have told that by the way the Cardinals performed.
Sean Gibson (Chicago, Ill.) won a pair of events and
Logan Twedt (Hastings, Minn.), Tony Gruenke (Sheboygan, Wis.), and
Brian Travers (Chicago, Ill.) also picked up first-place finishes in SMU's 50-39 loss to the Tommies. On the women's side, Lindsay DeLaRosby (Two Harbors, Minn.) posted a pair of first-place finishes to lead the way in the Cardinals' 59-27 setback to UST.
"The team scores didn't show it, but this was an outstanding meet for us," said SMU coach
Eric Lindquist. "Despite the long layoff, we didn't show any signs of rust."
Gibson touched the wall first in both the 50 and 100 freestyle, recording times of 23.34 and 51.90, respectively. Twedt chipped in a first-place effort in the 1,000 (10:59.65), while Gruenke's first came in the 100 butterfly (1:02.12) and Travers' was in the 500 freestyle (5:23.68).
On the women's side, DeLaRosby dominated the freestyle sprints, winning both the 50 (27.21) and the 100 (1:00.68). Heidi Andre (Fairbanks, Alaska) also had a strong meet, placing second in both the 500 (5:46.81) and 1,000 (11:55.15) freestyle events.
"There were some great times — a lot of personal bests, which is great to see," said Lindquist, whose team is right back in the pool Saturday afternoon, hosting St. Catherine in the final home meet of the season. "I was extremely pleased with our performance."
