Cardinals near-perfect in home finale

WINONA, Minn. — You won't see it on any result sheet, and it won't be recorded in the NCAA Division III record books, but the Saint Mary's University men's swimming and diving team certainly did something no other SMU swimming team hxas done — they won every single event they were entered in Saturday afternoon.

In fact, the Cardinals' opposition didn't even score a point in the meet.

But then, St. Catherine doesn't field a men's team, so the competition wasn't all that tough for the Cardinals.

"We felt it was important for our men to compete in another 'meet,' since we've been off for so long," explained SMU coach Eric Lindquist, whose team had only had one meet — Friday's dual-meet against St. Thomas — since Dec. 5. "Our guys wanted to go out and swim in a competitive atmosphere, and add to that that it was Senior Day — and our last home meet of the season — so we just decided to have the guys compete against themselves."

Sean Gibson (Chicago, Ill.) posted a time of 51.56 in beating out Tony Gruenke (Sheboygan, Wis.) in the 100 freestyle, while also winning the 200 freestyle (1:55.26) — beating out the other three members of the SMU team. Logan Twedt (Hastings, Minn.) cruised to an easy win over Brian Travers (Chicago, Ill.) in the 500 freestyle, stopping the clock in 5:20.24.

Some of that perfection must have rubbed off on the Cardinal women as well, as SMU just missed recording its first-ever dual-meet victory, falling to St. Catherine 116-113.

"When we are at home, our biggest focus is performing well — and we did that," said Lindquist. "Our women swam terrific — we had some great swims all around. It's was a heartbreaker to lose such a close meet."

Heidi Andre (Fairbanks, Alaska), who, like Abby Huot (Lake Elmo, Minn.), Jennifer Phillips (Red Wing, Minn.), Travers and Gruenke, was swimming in her final home meet, picked up a pair of first-place finishes in the 1,650 freestyle (19:27.17) and the 500 freestyle (5:41.76). Lindsay DeLaRosby (Two Harbors, Minn.) added a first in the 50 freestyle (26.85), while Victoria Evans (Junction City, Ore.) was first in the 100 butterfly and Jennifer Moore (Richfield, Minn.) and Ellen Meloy (Rochester, Minn.) won the 3-meter (198.65) and 1-meter (126.00) diving competitions, respectively.

"This was a terrific final home meet for us," said Lindquist. "I couldn't be happier for our women's team — they swam so well. But at the same time, I wish they could have pulled out the victory."
