WINONA, Minn. — On the scoreboard, the Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams lost their battles against Hamline — but when coach Eric Lindquist looks at the individual results, there's no question his Cardinals won the wars.

"This was a great, great meet for us," said Lindquist, whose team set a pair of school records and posted a number of season-best swims in their dual-meet losses to Hamline. "Obviously, the final scores don't show it, but we had a phenomenal day. Two school records, several awesome swims, I'm very, very pleased with the way we performed."

Sean Gibson (Chicago, Ill.) picked up one of the Cardinals' school records, as the senior won the 100 freestyle in a time of 49.47. Freshman Danielle Braun (Cold Spring, Minn.) etched her name in the SMU record books in the 100 breaststroke, placing second in 1:12.95.

But that was just the tip of the iceberg.

Gibson collected his second first-place effort in the 50 freestyle, touching the wall in 22.70, just missing the school's record, but setting a personal best just the same. Lindsay DeLaRosby (Two Harbors, Minn.) added a first in the 50 freestyle with a personal-best 25.93, while Lindsey Salisbury (Waukesha, Wis. / 200 IM, 2:33.20), Kasey Schultz (Cary, Ill. / 500 freestyle, 5:59.06) and Brian Joyce (Chicago, Ill. / 200 IM, 2:21.05; 100 breaststroke, 1:11.78) all chipped in second-place performances.

"I can't say enough about the efforts today," said Lindquist, who also got a first-place showing from his women's 200 medley relay team, which touched in the wall in 2:03.06. "We've said from Day 1 that the key to our season is going to be continued improvement as we gear up for the (season-ending MIAC Championships) — and we definitely saw that improvement today,"
