Game Summary
WINONA, Minn. — After last season's 95-61 loss to cross-town rival Winona State University, the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team, along with first-year head coach Mike Trewick, wanted to erase the 34-point loss and start off on a new foot in its home-court opener Tuesday against the Warriors.
But after the final buzzer sounded in the SMU Gymnasium, the result was no different — SMU was handed a 31-point loss, 71-40, and shot only 38 percent in field goals against the NCAA Division II Warriors.
"I told the guys if they took care of the ball, they'd control the game — but we didn't do that. That was the problem," said SMU cøach Mike Trewick, whose team also posted 29 turnovers on the game. "We played a lot of young guys who are still learning college ball."
Winona State (3-2) highlighted the first half with a 10-0 run, lasting from 19-13 to 29-13, and the Warriors left for halftime intermission up by 18, 34-16.
But that wasn't the end of their run — the Warriors took off on another 10-point excursion from 41-25 to 51-25 in the second half, holding the run for four minutes to build-up a comfortable cushion before sealing the win.
A win that marked WSU coach Mike Leaf's 100th career win as head coach.
David Zellmann of WSU was one of three Warriors in double figures, posting 22 points, while Zach Malvik and Jon Urbach both contributed 12.
For Saint Mary's (0-3), Jimmy Wajda (Minneapolis, Minn.) led with nine points, while both Dan Cormier (Blaine, Minn.) and Dan Kloak (Elmwood Park, Ill.) put in eight.
"We couldn't keep up--we'll face closer competition on Saturday when we play one of our own conference teams," said Trewick, noting the Cardinals open Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday at 3 p.m. when they play host to Augsburg. "If we keep our heads in the game, things should fall our way."
