Game Summary

WINONA, Minn. — Mike Trewick isn't about to use Jeff Tendall's (LeClaire, Iowa) injury as a crutch, but when the Saint Mary's University senior went down with a shoulder injury last Saturday, it certainly made life a bit more difficult for the Cardinal men's basketball team.

And Monday evening, the Cardinals' head coach sure could have used his top gun.

Without their leading scorer, the Cardinals' offense was stuck in neutral against Macalester on Monday, as the Scots jumped out to a 36-22 halftime advantage and never looked back in handing SMU its fifth straight loss, a 78-58 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference decision.

Dan Kloak (Elmwood Park, Ill.) led a trio of SMU players in double figures, as the junior shot 50 percent from the field (7 of 14) — including a pair of 3-pointers — in scoring 17 points. Brensley Haywood (Joliet, Ill.) chipped in a career-high 16 points and Eric Lear (Antioch, Ill) tallied 11 in the losing effort for SMU (0-2 MIAC, 0-5 overall).

Tom Conboy netted a team-high 17 points for Macalester, which had five players reach double figures as the Scots picked up their first conference win in three tries and moved to 2-5 overall.

Macalester put the game out of reach early, using a 21-9 run to open the game and padded that lead to 16, 28-12, with 5:08 remaining on a 3-pointer by Will Moeller. Up by 14 at the break, Macalester pushed the lead to 20, 46-26 in the opening two minutes of the second half , but the Cardinals battled back, using a 27-12 run of their own to cut the gap to five, 58-53, with 8:56 left in regulation.

That, however, was as close as SMU would get, as Macalester scored 11 straight points a 20-5 run to seal the win.
