Box Score Game Summary
MOORHEAD, Minn. — Coming from behind has been something the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team has gotten pretty good at.
Hanging on to leads, on the other hand, hasn't.
The Cardinals let a 2-1 second-period lead slip through their fingers Saturday afternoon, as Concordia scored twice in the last 11 minutes of the second period en route to a 3-2 win over SMU, keeping the Cobbers' slim MIAC post-season playoffs hopes alive, while keeping the Cardinals' hopes hanging by a thread.
The Cardinals entered Saturday's game in third place in the MIAC standings, one point ahead of Gustavus, two points in front of Augsburg and four points ahead of St. Olaf. SMU, however, has just two games remaining — next weekend against Hamline — while Gustavus, Augsburg and St. Olaf all have four conference games remaining.
Concordia got on the board first Saturday, getting a goal from Brett Johnson just 1:07 into the opening period. SMU, which got three third-period goals in beating the Cobbers 4-3 on Friday evening — responded with back-to-back goals from Al Schumacher (Oakdale, Minn.) and Nick Meeker (Rochester, Minn.) less than a minute apart late in the period to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead after one.
SMU held that one-goal advantage until the 11:55 mark of the second period, when Brice Berggren tied the game with his fourth goal of the season. With just two minutes remaining, Concordia netted the game-winner as Matt Hanson beat SMU goalie Curtis Nosal (Omaha, Neb.).
