Game Summary

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Saint Mary's University women's hockey team saw its winning streak — and its shutout streak — come to a screeching half Monday evening, as Buffalo State scored twice in the second period and once in the third to earn a 3-3 nonconference tie with the Cardinals.

SMU, which had not given up a goal since the final seconds of a 3-0 loss to Gustavus on Feb. 9 — including a 4-0 win over Buffalo State in Sunday's first meeting between the two teams — pushed that shutout streak to 210:46 with a scoreless first period on Monday.

Buffalo State finally ended the streak when Tara Ostempowski beat SMU goalie Amanda Gage (Lino Lakes, Minn.) to tie the game 1-1 midway through the second period.

The Cardinals responded with back-to-back goals by Jenny Hocum (Rochester, Minn.) and Alissa Schultz (LeSueur, Minn.) to take what seemed like a commanding 3-1 advantage. A goal by Buffalo State's Jamie Overbeck with less than a minute remaining in the second period, however, made it a one-goal game heading into the final period.

Buffalo State then got the equalizer midway through the third period on a goal by Emma Wadsworth to tie the game.

The Cardinals outshot Buffalo State 39-18, giving them a 81-26 edge in shots on goal in the two-game nonconference series. SMU, which had its three-game winning streak snapped with the tie, returns to conference play this weekend, traveling to St. Olaf on Friday, before returning home for the second game of the two-game MIAC series on Saturday.
