WINONA, Minn. — It's been a long time since the Saint Mary's University men's tennis team has beaten Concordia.
Eight years, to be exact.
But coach
Jeff Halberg and the Cardinals don't have to worry about that streak any longer — thanks to Saturday's 6-3 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory.
The Cardinals picked up four singles wins — including a sweep of the top three singles spots — and posted wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles in snapping their two-match winning streak with their third conference win in five tries.
"This was a big, big win for our guys," said Halberg. "We've had a lot of near-misses against (Concordia) over the last eight years, but we never could quite get over the hump. This time, we played well from top to bottom and came away with the win."
Tyler Stevenson (Neenah, Wis.),
Mark Leeder (Greenfield, Wis.) and
Bryan Haville (Onalaska, Wis.) all posted hard-fought straight-set wins at No. 1-3 singles, while
Dan Fahey (Brookfield, Ill.) needed three sets to pick up his 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 win at No. 6 singles.
Haville and
Adam Solseth (Shakopee, Minn.) won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles, while
Tony Miller (Rochester, Minn.) and
Andrew Pamperin (Menomonie, Wis.) teamed for an 8-6 win at No. 3.
"They guys should be proud of this win," Halberg said. "It's such a giant step forward for our men's program."
