St. Thomas holds off Cardinal men

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The difference between Saturday and Sunday was like night and day for the Saint Mary's University men's and women's tennis teams.

Saturday, the sun certainly seemed to be shining down on the Cardinals, as the men broke an eight-year drought vs. Concordia with a 6-3 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win, while the women put together a pair of impressive performances in beating Concordia 7-2 and Martin Luther 8-1.

Twenty-four hours later, however, day quickly turned to night, as the Cardinal men failed to win a set against high-powered St. Thomas, losing 9-0, while the SMU women got a 9-7 win from Lisa Thompson (Lake City, Minn.) and Emily Strom (Waterford, Wis.) at No. 2 doubles to show for their efforts in an 8-1 loss to the Tommies.

"St. Thomas has such a solid lineup — both on the men's side, and the women's side," said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. "Some of the matches were quite competitive, we just couldn't match their depth. I was proud of the way we battled against a very tough team, and hopefully that fight and determination continues throughout the season."
