Johnnies ungracious hosts in routing SMU

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team entered Sunday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against St. John's looking for a way to snap out of its current two-match losing streak.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, what they encountered was a group of ungracious hosts, as St. John's swept the three doubles matches and won five of the six singles matches in handing SMU an 8-1 setback.

"St. John's was a deep and determined team," said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. "We had a lot of close matches, but we just weren't quite able to break through."

One bright spot for the Cardinals was the play of sophomore Tyler Stevenson (Neenah, Wis.), who knocked off regionally and nationally ranked Mike Solum in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 10-8. Tony Miller (Rochester, Minn.) also went three sets in his singles match, but unlike Stevenson, Miller came out on the short end of a 6-2, 6-7 (6), 10-5 decision at No. 4 singles.

"Tyler played a great match," said Halberg. "Solum has been one of the conference's top players over the last four years, and for Tyler to pick up a win like that is a great accomplishment for him."
