WAVERLY, Iowa — The Saint Mary's University baseball team gave up 12 runs in its nonconference doubleheader against Wartburg Saturday afternoon — six runs in each game.

Big deal — the Cardinals scored 15, seven in the first and eight in the second, as they snapped a five-game losing streak with a 7-6, 8-6 sweep of the Knights.

Through the first six innings of Game 1, however, it looked more like SMU was headed for its sixth straight loss, rather than its first win since opening the season with a 4-0 win over Penn State-Altoona on March 11. Wartburg scored in every inning but the second, taking a 6-2 lead into the top of the seventh inning.

In their final at-bat, however, SMU's bats finally came to life, as they scored five runs — three coming on Rob Kimlinger's (Lake Elmo, Minn.) first home run of the season — and another on a two-out homer off the bat of Ryan Majerus (St. Charles, Minn.). Kimlinger finished a perfect 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs and a pair of runs scored, while Tony Cicalello (St. Paul, Minn.) chipped in two hits and a pair of RBIs.

SMU picked up right where it left off in Game 2, sandwiching a pair of three-run innings around single runs in the first and fifth en route to the win.

Pat Gornick (West St. Paul, Minn.) highlighted SMU's three-run third inning, belting a two-run single to give SMU a 4-0 advantage.

Wartburg responded with four runs of its own in the bottom of the third, but SMU regained the lead for good with their second-straight three-run inning in the top of the fourth.
