ST. PETER, Minn. — The day certainly got off on the right foot for the Saint Mary's University men's tennis team, as the Cardinals won four of the six singles matches and a pair of doubles matches en route to a 6-3 nonconference win over Minnesota State Saturday afternoon.
In their second match of the day, however, the Cardinals were all left feet, as defending Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion Gustavus manhandled SMU, winning all six singles matches in straight sets en route to the 9-0 victory.
Tyler Stevenson (Neenah, Wis.) breezed to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles to get things started for the Cardinals against Minnesota State.
Bryan Haville (Onalaska, Wis.) and
Tony Miller (Rochester, Minn.) also won in straight sets, with Haville winning 6-4, 7-5 and Miller taking a 6-3, 6-2 decision. Things weren't quite that easy for
Mark Leeder (Greenfield, Wis.), as the SMU junior needed three sets to get his 6-0, 3-6, 11-8 win at No. 2 singles.
The doubles teams of Stevenson-Leeder and Miller-
Andrew Pamperin (Menomonie, Wis.) were also victorious against the Mustangs, cruising to 8-5 wins.
