WINONA, Minn. — The roller coaster ride continues for the Saint Mary's University men's tennis team.
The Cardinals — who went from the highest of highs (a 6-3 win over Minnesota State) to the lowest of lows (a 9-0 drubbing at the hands of MIAC power Gustavus) last Saturday — found themselves back on the peak Monday, thanks to an 8-1 nonconference victory over Martin Luther.
The Cardinals swept all six singles matches and also won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles en route to their fifth win of the season.
But win No. 5 wasn't as easy as the final score indicates.
Using a new-look lineup that had only
Tyler Stevenson (Neenah, Wis.) in his normal spot at No. 1 singles, SMU got straight-set singles wins from Stevenson,
Bryan Haville (Onalaska, Wis.),
Adam Solseth (Shakopee, Minn.) and
Kevin Wriskey (White Bear Lake, Minn.).
Dan Fahey (Brookfield, Ill.) needed three sets to beat Brad Nehls 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 at No. 4, while Dustin Kresen (Riverside, Ill.) picked up his first collegiate singles win with a 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 win at No. 6.
Solseth also teamed with
Mark Leeder (Greenfield, Ill.) for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles, while
Tony Miller (Rochester, Minn.) and
Andrew Pamperin (Menomonie, Wis.) completed the rout with an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles.
